Board of Directors

Phyllis Benjamin, President
Phyllis Benjamin has been involved with the Community Learning Center for almost 30 years–as a volunteer tutor, part-time teacher, and Board member and officer of the Friends of CLC. This is her fourth year as President of the Friends. Since 1999, Phyllis has been a Elementary Literacy Specialist for the Newton Public Schools, helping ensure that all students become more proficient readers and writers. In the past two years, she has served as an Intervention Specialist, focusing on supporting struggling readers. Phyllis holds a Bachelors degree from Yale University and Masters degrees in Musicology and Education from Harvard University. In addition to her professional career and her volunteer work for the Friends of the Community Learning Center, she sings with Chorus pro Musica and is an avid practitioner of traditional martial arts.

“It is a pleasure to work with the Community Learning Center to  support its mission of creating opportunities for hardworking members of our community through education and job training. I believe that providing opportunities for all to grow and develop to their potential lifts us all, and expresses the best of who we are. Programs like the Bridge to College, the Certified Nurses Assistant training, language classes, citizenship classes, and general education programs all provide opportunities for people to build better lives.  I am pleased and proud to be a part of this effort.”-Phyllis Benjamin

Chuck Brandstater
Chuck Brandstater, a computer programmer in his first career, since 1996 has been a freelance copy editor, proofreader, and translator. Having served as a volunteer tutor and teacher’s aide during the first three years of his association with the Community Learning Center, in late 2014 Chuck eagerly began applying his passionate belief in the organization’s mission in a further direction: as a member of the CLC Board, where he still looks forward to growing into other roles in which to help maintain the organization’s high profile. Chuck now describes his efforts with the CLC as his (belatedly discovered) life’s work!
